Is It A Good Idea To Service Your Own Car?
With the astronomical cost of servicing some cars on a regular basis it can sometimes make sense to service your car yourself. But if you do not get the garage to stamp the service book then you are going to find that the resale value of the car is affected.
So the person who wanted to buy your car would be offering you a price for the car based on the fact that you had been servicing it yourself.
If you have a little bit of car knowledge and can follow guides and instructions then you should have no problem conducting a service on your own car. And when it comes to the actual service of the car it would be better if you had somewhere where you would not have to worry about oil spills etc because you will need to drain the old oil from the car. This is something you will have to do for every service and you need to make sure you dispose of your oil properly too.
You may also have to replace the air and oil filters in your car but in many cases as long as you wash these properly, they will be fine. Washing your filters will only be possible if the filter is in good condition and it will also depend on the type of filter that you have.
You should also check your plugs as these can need changing at any point from 1 year to 4 years old depending on whether or not they are iridium or platinum plugs. You should get at least 40K miles before you need to change either of these types of plug.
You are obviously going to find it much easier to service your car if you know what you are doing and if you are a patient person with time on your hands. In most cases though, you are better off having a professional do it for you.
